âIâm surprised you didnât want to bring Olivia. I heard thereâs supposed to be dancing. Oh, my. Thereâs a proper dance floor. And a band. Look at all the gowns. Everyone looks so pretty. Itâs like a scene out of a movie.â
Nico pushed his mom in her wheelchair into the ballroom. It was just as lavish as heâd imagined. The benefit for the cancer wing at the hospital would do better to save some money and use that to renovate.
âLivi was busy tonight since this was last notice. But she promised sheâd be at your house tomorrow for dinner. Iâll cook your Parmigiana di Melanzane. You said yesterday you wished you could have some.â If she would eat, heâd cook her anything.
âBut will she eat eggplant?â She tried to twist in her wheelchair, but he already knew she didnât have the energy. He stepped to the side so she could see him easily.
âIâm sure sheâll try it.â And knowing Olivia, sheâd fake it if she didnât like it. âLetâs find our table.â
His mom folded her hands in her lap. Sheâd worn a black dress with tiny red flowers, so small they looked like polka dots from far away. The center of each flower contained a tiny cluster of red glitter that caught the light as he rolled her through the ballroom.
âIt was so nice to be selected to attend this year,â she said.
âYou deserve a night out. Iâm surprised you won. You never win anything.â
She widened her eyes. âNicolas! I feel like thatâs an insult.â
He kissed her cheek. âYet, itâs the truth. I remember you thinking Publisherâs Clearing House was going to knock on our door every week. And donât think I donât see the lottery tickets Bianca sends you.â He wheeled her to a lower table set near the front. âBut you canât win if you never try, right? And you won us a nice dinner and hopefully some decent wine. Would you like a glass?â
âYes, dear. Not sure how it will hold in my stomach, but Iâd like to have a few sips. Swing my chair around so I can watch the dance floor.â She grabbed his hand as he stepped away. âAnd thank you, Nico. For everything youâve done for me.â
âNo thanks needed. Iâm not even close to paying you back for everything youâve done for Bianca and me.â He left her to her people-watching and maneuvered between the tables. Over two hundred people milled around, all in long dresses and dark suits. Nico had borrowed a tuxedo from Blake after the short notice on the invitation to the dinner. Not like he had a reason to drop that much money on a real one. Not unless Kyle suddenly changed the dress code for the company to formal. But he and Blake had similar body types, and although the pants were a bit loose in the waist, a belt had solved that problem.
The short line at the bar gave him a second to check his phone. Still no reply text from Olivia.
