“I’m surprised you didn’t want to bring Olivia. I heard there’s supposed to be dancing. Oh, my. There’s a proper dance floor. And a band. Look at all the gowns. Everyone looks so pretty. It’s like a scene out of a movie.”

Nico pushed his mom in her wheelchair into the ballroom. It was just as lavish as he’d imagined. The benefit for the cancer wing at the hospital would do better to save some money and use that to renovate.

“Livi was busy tonight since this was last notice. But she promised she’d be at your house tomorrow for dinner. I’ll cook your Parmigiana di Melanzane. You said yesterday you wished you could have some.” If she would eat, he’d cook her anything.

“But will she eat eggplant?” She tried to twist in her wheelchair, but he already knew she didn’t have the energy. He stepped to the side so she could see him easily.

“I’m sure she’ll try it.” And knowing Olivia, she’d fake it if she didn’t like it. “Let’s find our table.”

His mom folded her hands in her lap. She’d worn a black dress with tiny red flowers, so small they looked like polka dots from far away. The center of each flower contained a tiny cluster of red glitter that caught the light as he rolled her through the ballroom.

“It was so nice to be selected to attend this year,” she said.

“You deserve a night out. I’m surprised you won. You never win anything.”

She widened her eyes. “Nicolas! I feel like that’s an insult.”

He kissed her cheek. “Yet, it’s the truth. I remember you thinking Publisher’s Clearing House was going to knock on our door every week. And don’t think I don’t see the lottery tickets Bianca sends you.” He wheeled her to a lower table set near the front. “But you can’t win if you never try, right? And you won us a nice dinner and hopefully some decent wine. Would you like a glass?”

“Yes, dear. Not sure how it will hold in my stomach, but I’d like to have a few sips. Swing my chair around so I can watch the dance floor.” She grabbed his hand as he stepped away. “And thank you, Nico. For everything you’ve done for me.”

“No thanks needed. I’m not even close to paying you back for everything you’ve done for Bianca and me.” He left her to her people-watching and maneuvered between the tables. Over two hundred people milled around, all in long dresses and dark suits. Nico had borrowed a tuxedo from Blake after the short notice on the invitation to the dinner. Not like he had a reason to drop that much money on a real one. Not unless Kyle suddenly changed the dress code for the company to formal. But he and Blake had similar body types, and although the pants were a bit loose in the waist, a belt had solved that problem.

The short line at the bar gave him a second to check his phone. Still no reply text from Olivia.
